Jason Christie maintains the lead in Day 2 of the 2016 Bassmaster Classic with another strong performance. Following behind Christie in the standings is Todd Faircloth, Edwin Evers, Bill Lowen and Aaron Martens.

“It wasn’t a great day by Grand Lake standards, but it was pretty good compared to what everybody else did today,” said Christie, who lives in Park Hill, Okla., just an hour from Grand Lake. “Just like Friday, I was surprised that I had as much weight as I did.”

“I don’t know if there’s any such thing as ‘home-free’ on Grand Lake,” Christie said. “There are a lot of big fish in this lake, and anything can happen.”

Grand Lake has proven to be a grind for most of the Classic field as the weights have been lower than expected for Day 2. Anglers coming to the weigh in with few or zero fish were common; Kevin Van Dam, Russ Lane and Justin Lucas were among the pros to show up empty handed.

Kevin Van Dam put it best when he said “bass fishing is one of the most humbling sports of all” as he stepped up for his interview with MC, Dave Mercer at the weigh in.

With 13-lbs-12-0z on Day 1 and 17-lbs-8-oz on Day 2, Evers was one of the few anglers whose catch improved dramatically Saturday. He said his better catch was the result of a complete change in strategy.

“It’s not hard to improve when you only catch four fish the first day,” Evers said, laughing. “I went and did something totally different today, and it’s not really the kind of thing that you normally do to win on Grand. But Grand is not normal right now.”

Although many anglers claimed to have seen big fish in the shallow muddy waters of Grand Lake o’the Cherokees, few were able to get them to bite. This was evident as the Big Bass leader was Bill Lowen with a 5-lb-8oz largemouth. There were only a few other anglers with large fish in the 5-lbs range. Most notable were Greg Vinson and Aaron Martens who both weighed in large fish, but couldn’t take the Big Bass Leader from Bill.

The theme throughout the weigh in with anglers was frustration and humility. Anglers who could not bring in a 5-fish stringer were humbled and appreciative at the chance to fish the 2016 Bassmaster Classic. Anglers who were fortunate enough to make the cut were hopeful that Grand Lake would show what monsters lie in its waters.

Weather forecasts for Grand Lake show that there will be some wind on the last day of the classic. Wind is expected to hit 17-mph by noon. This wind should improve fishing and activate those large fish that have proven so hard to catch all weekend.

Water temperatures on Grand Lake have been in the 40-47 degree range. As the day progressed a few anglers commented that they did find some creek arms with warmer water in the 50’s. If anglers can find those areas with warmer water again, there may be some active larger fish willing to bite. The higher winds will help activate those fish as well.

Lures that anglers have been successful with have varied greatly. Randy Howell spent most of Day 2 using a spinnerbait on a log ridden flat and caught his fish slow rolling it over wood. Bill Lowen caught the biggest fish of Day 2 with a dark-color jig. He let it sit for long periods and worked it slowly over rocks along the bank and under docks to earn his fourth place standing on Day 2.
