Bass Pro Shops 100 MPH Parka – Product Reviewby Grant Pentiricci December 20, 2012
To make a long story short, I’m up in Canada and it gets cold here, real cold! I also love to fish and I don’t always get to pick the weather I fish in. That means that I’m out no matter the weather, be it rain, wind or snow. I recently decided to purchase a new jacket for fishing and chose the 100 MPH parka from BPS. Hopefully I’ll be able to help those of you who are looking for a new jacket to make a better informed decision.
BPS 100 MPH Parka – Pros
I chose this jacket because I was impressed with the reviews I read on the BPS website. It also boasts a full GORE-TEX membrane that makes it very waterproof and windproof. When I inspected the jacket I really liked the waterproof features on the pockets and zippers as well. This is really important to me as I keep my cell phone close for emergencies and I don’t want it getting ruined by getting wet. The high quality denier polyester construction of the jacket was also a huge plus for me. Being dry and avoiding the biting wind was my main concern over everything. I’m the type of guy that hates the cold and if I’m miserable then the day is over pretty quickly.
When I tried on this jacket I noticed three features that I thought were really cool. Firstly, there is a drop down hip cover that can be let down. This flap allows you to sit preventing your butt from getting wet if the surface is wet from the rain- really cool! I also really like the fact that this jacket had a draw cord along the bottom that you can tighten to stop wind from blowing up the jacket. And lastly I loved the inner neoprene sleeve “cuffs” that prevent wind from blowing up your arms.
Bass Pro Shops has a great no hassle warranty on this product. They back this jacket 100% and as with all their branded items if you have any problems you can return it to the store within 1 year of the purchase date and they will take care of you. BPS branded items like this parka may be returned even after the warranty period on an inspection basis for exchange.
BPS 100 MPH Parka – Cons
Although this jacket seems to have it all. It does lack insulation. The BPS website describes this jacket as being perfect for summer rainstorms. However, if you put on several warm layers under this shell, you are sure to be kept warm, dry and away from the biting cold wind. This can be a pro depending on how you look at it- not having a lot of insulation means that you can wear the jacket in warmer weather.
The price on this jacket is also pretty steep. At a whopping $329.99 CDN for a large-tall (my size) this jacket is definitely for serious anglers that plan on fishing in any weather they encounter and don’t want to skimp on gear.
Although I’m a bit of a brand whore, I found that the bright Bass Pro Shops logos on the front were a little too much for my taste. Wearing it I felt a little like a walking billboard!
