Aim for the 02

Oxygen is diminishing, too. Some areas are completely void of oxygen, while other pockets have just enough to sustain life. So you migrate to where respiration is still an option.

Seasonal Shifts: Jig It Where You Cast It Yesterday!

Fall’s wicked transformation into winter is the harshest of all

Ice anglers know that being safe is probably as important (if not more) than being warm when you are out on the ice. The Frabill I3 jacket and bibs have features that keep your safety in mind as well as your comfort. When looking for ice gear, I instinctively look for something as warm as possible (since I always seem to be cold). Safety seems to fall off the radar, but the I3 handily takes care of this problem with the inclusion of Ice pick when you purchase the jacket…sweeeet!

Firstly, the Frabill I3 Ice Suit is constructed with a waterproof, windproof, breathable 300-denier nylon Taslan shell that is 100% seam sealed. When on the ice, this was very warm and kept the elements out without any issues. I had put on a few layers on under the jacket and was super warm. It’s important to regulate your body moisture when out on the ice, so I opened the jacket at times to make sure I didn’t sweat excessively.

The 150g Thinsulate insulation definitely did its job. When combined with the I3 bibs, there was no wind penetration into the suit. I even wore the I3 while fishing for bass in the fall. At high-speed the I3 didn’t allow wind to penetrate good news for bass anglers looking for heavy duty gear to keep them warm.

The inclusion of a set of ice picks is a great safety feature that Frabill has added to their jacket. The ice picks are attached to a bungee and have convenient holsters where they stay out-of-the-way and ready for use. This a huge advantage for anyone who knows the perils of falling through thin ice.

The I3 also has 3M™ Scotchlite reflective material to keep you safe when you are out on the ice during low light conditions early in the morning or after dusk. This reflective material lets others know where you are so you can be easily spotted.

Another pro is the price. At an MSRP of $199.99 USD, the I3 is certainly a piece of equipment well within any ice angler’s budget and well worth the investment. The jacket is packed with features such as hand warmer pockets with Tricot lining, adjustable/removable hood with sun visor and an internal electronic pocket to keep your cell phone protected. Considering how much I use this suit and its versatility, it is well-priced

Reflecting on my use of the I3, I can’t really say many bad things about it. I have the brown version of the suit and the color, which some anglers may not view as fashionable. However the I3 is also offered in more modern black and grey versions.

 On The Water

The Frabill I3 is a capable ice suit. It kept me warm throughout full days of fishing. What I find important about ice suits is that they have the ability to prevent you from sweating, which can be deadly, and the I3 has plenty of opportunities for anglers to regulate their body moisture. When I got too hot I simply opened the velcro openings on the bib legs, or unzipped the jacket. The breathable nylon shell also seemed to work well and reduced the amount of moisture in my upper body.

While in cold conditions, I also came to appreciate the extra insulation in the butt area of the bibs as well as the reinforced knees that the bibs had. Frabill really put a lot of though into how this suit would be primarily used and designed the I3 with that in mind. It’s clear that ice anglers had input in the suit’s design. Frabill got these design elements right!

I didn’t have the opportunity to wear the I3 in full rain, but I can say that when I came indoors from a day out on the water, the snow melted off the suit and there was no moisture in the suit. I would probably recommend a spray of Scotch Guard water-repellent before use in rain just to be sure.

I highly recommend that the I3 be used with both the jacket and bibs being worn. This suit is also very useful for those wanting to wear it snowmobiling, hunting or cold weather bass fishing. I actually found that it was my go to suit for almost anything I did outdoors in cold conditions. The insulation and wind barrier properties of this suit are just too good to ignore!

I think that if you are an outdoorsman, you should buy equipment that exceeds your needs, so if you need to call upon it, it can deliver. The I3 Ice suit is so much more than just a capable ice-fishing suit and I am wearing it for much more than its designed purpose. Definitely a must have for ice anglers, or for anyone in cold weather!

how does a guy go to the bathroom without taking off the jacket and dropping the bibs just to pee. I cant believe they would make a suit with no access for a man to use the bathroom.

Lol, good point. I just wore this suit 2 days ago. You can just unzip the jacket and partially pull down the top of the bibs. Of course, they don’t have the “pee zipper” – that would have been a nice feature.
