GAMBLER LURES’ RETRO RUBBER STILL HAS THE MAGIC!by JP Bushey September 17, 2013
After stumbling across that old pack of Gambler Lures worms I bought close to 20 years ago, I came across a pack of their old craws, too. Both were great producers when I targeted both smallmouth and largemouth, back in my teens.
I decided to rig up a craw on a 3/4-oz football head and take a drive out to a good, multi-species shoal on Georgian Bay yesterday morning. The split screen on the Lowrance HD doesn’t leave fish with many places to hide. The crown comes up to about 12′. I began marking a few just outside the high spot, dumped the craw down, hopped it twice and had a nice one swim up and smack it.
Both the craws and the worms have been in that storage tub since the late 80’s. They’re still as supple and attractive as ever. And fish clearly still love ’em, as they did for me so long ago. Way to go, Gambler. You guys are still cranking out great baits all these years later, and your old classics are still catching ’em.
