Mercury Unveils a New Fourstroke

by February 15, 2018

Today Mercury Marine announced the official launch of its all-new naturally aspirated 3.4L V-6 FourStroke outboard lineup at 175, 200 and 225hp. The official announcement was made today at 10:15 am EST at the Miami International Boat Show. You can watch it here:

Mercury Marine claims that the new V-6 is the quietest and lightest engine in its class. To sum up the Top  things you need to know about today’s events at the Mercury booth check the list below.

The full list of products to be announced at Miami includes:

• New 175-225hp 3.4L V6 FourStroke outboard family
• 150hp Pro XS outboard
• New Mercury Propellers Fury, Fury 4 and Revolution pitches
• Expansion of Mercury Racing High Performance Propeller Lines

Some interesting takeaways our team got from this announcement:

  • the 250 fourstroke was not announced – is Mercury saving that for “step 2?”
  • Mercury has re-occupied lake X again
  • this engine lineup will replace both the L4 Verado and Optimax lineup
  • the new outboards have adaptive speed control
  • the engines come in multiple colors- three shades of white as well as 4 other standard colors as well as blank for boat builders to match the engine if they wish
  • lightest fourstroke on the market now
  • 7% fuel economy improvement at WOT, 12% at mid-cruise and 16% at low-cruise
  • service door on cowl so you can change the oil without removing the cowl
  • commercial gear case available which gives 3x the life
  • 23,000 hours of testing done on these new outboards was done before they were released

Mercury has claimed that this announcement is a game changer for the outboard industry. It’s definitely overdue and exciting to see how these new fourstrokes stack up to the current offerings by Yamaha, Honda and others. Bass boat guys will be watching closely and the 250hp outboard which is sure to come will be the subject of intense scrutiny.

These motors look pretty sweet though!
