MinnKota Launches The New Ultrex

by July 25, 2016

UltrexYou know, its usually not a big thing when a company such as Minn Kota decides to launch a new model of trolling motor, after all, that’s their core business right? Well, as if the Ulterra wasn’t groundbreaking enough, now Minn Kota has unveiled the new Ultrex at ICAST 2016 in Orlando.

The Ultrex is really groundbreaking, more so than the Ulterra, in that it marries the cable steering which bass anglers love to the electric steer that has all the features walleye anglers love as well. Imagine the possibilities!

Now bass anglers can have the feel and power of their beloved cable steer motor with the option to target deeper waters. It’s when you go deeper with the Ultrex that you will be ale to take advantage of exciting features such as follow the contour and spot lock- all this with the new and improved I-pilot remote. Bass anglers will have their cake and eat it too! With the ability to link the Ultrex to Helix units your Autochart maps will now be even that much more useful. This has huge implications for anglers in Canada as well as areas without Lakemaster maps.

We shot a quick video with Brad Henry, Minn Kota brand manager, to discuss the Ultrex. He gave us a detailed tour of this cool new motor. Check it out below:

As mentioned in the video, the Ultrex is built on the Fortrex base which includes the lift assist gas shock as well as the solid one piece arm. The footpedal has been re-designed to include an upgraded version of spot lock. The electric motor is also the same as the Fortrex. The steering is electric drive and will react to how much pressure you put down with your foot. The Minn Kota Ultrex product line-up comprises numerous i-Pilot- or i-Pilot Link- and US2-enabled combos, including 24-volt 80 lbs. thrust and 36-volt 112 lbs. thrust versions in 45”, 52” and 60” shaft lengths.

Some features that the new Ultrex has are listed below:

  • Power Steering: Ultra-responsive control and reduces steering effort and foot fatigue
  • Steering Lock: Take your foot off the pedal and keep your motor heading
  • Ultrex Foot Pedal: Power steering with Spot-Lock and AutoPilot Buttons
  • Lift-Assist
  • Fortrex Mono Arm bracket
  • Coated stainless steel stow/deploy adjustable cable
  • Bluetooth-enabled i-Pilot or i-Pilot Link
  • Digital Maximizer
  • Universal Sonar 2
  • Composite Shaft
  • Weedless Wedge 2 Prop

When I tested out the Ultrex at this year’s Icast it was super smooth and I really loved it. I also liked how sleek the cable steer was tied up as well as the upgrade to the lift handle from a rope to a steel cable.

One thing to note: the Ultrex will cost around the same as the Ulterra- around $2199.99-$2799.99 bucks and be released sometime late this year. I’m not sure how well the first production units will work but usually its safe to say that there will be some bugs in a system as revolutionary as this. Some of you won’t be able to resist and will want to grab this motor as soon as it is released.
