Raid Japan Buggy Craw – ICAST 2015by Grant Pentiricci July 17, 2015
Every once in a while, you come across something that catches your eye and makes you go Hmm. This year, when I was at ICAST 2015, walking through the New Product Showcase, I had that exact moment. I was in the soft baits section and saw a soft plastic bait that really got me thinking.
The Buggy Craw from Raid Japan is as JDM as it gets. MSRP on this bait is $12 USD per pack of six. Raid Japan makes the Buggy Craw in a 4″ size and in 10 colors. It’s a new Japanese version of the backslide lure. They have taken the back-slide concept and perfected it. It is uniquely balanced so that it allows you to cast at your target from any angle and not worry about how steep the bait will fall once it hits the water. It slides consistently, regardless of the angle.
I had the opportunity to touch this bait and the plastic felt very different. It had a consistency that was much more dense than normal plastics. It was also weighted differently. When tested in a tank set-up, it performed very convincingly.
Sometimes at these big conventions, you come across a fantastic idea that many people overlook, or ignore. This little soft plastic really caught my attention and seems like the perfect solution to many anglers’ dilemmas about getting under hard to reach targets. Of course, the backsliding bait is not new. However, one that looks like a fat bug or craw hasn’t been available to me locally; and I didn’t have any in my tacklebox…until now.
